Frequently asked questions about Content Rule Profiles in Zype CMS.
What is a Content Rule Profile?
A Content Rule Profile is a named, reusable set of geographic allow/deny rules that you create in CMS Site Settings and assign to videos or playlists. Profiles replace the previous per-asset content rules approach with a centralized, scalable model. Each profile contains an ordered list of rules evaluated top-to-bottom — the first matching rule determines whether a viewer is allowed or denied.
How do I migrate from category content rules?
Category content rules were retired as part of this release and were not automatically migrated. If your account used category rules, you’ll need to recreate those restrictions using Content Rule Profiles.
- Review your previous category rule configurations.
- Create new profiles in Settings → Site Settings → Content Rules Settings.
- Assign profiles to the videos and playlists that were previously governed by category rules.
- Use the Test Content Rules tool to verify the new rules behave correctly.
See Migration Guide: What Happened to Your Existing Content Rules for full instructions. Contact your Account Manager for personalized assistance.
Can I apply the same profile to multiple videos?
Yes. Profiles are designed to be reusable. Create a profile once and assign it to as many videos or playlists as needed. When you update a profile, the change automatically applies everywhere that profile is assigned — no need to update each asset individually.
For large libraries, use bulk apply operations from the Video Library list view to assign a profile to many videos at once.
What happens if a video is in multiple playlists with different profiles?
Only the profile of the playlist the viewer is currently playing from applies. Zype does not merge or combine rules across all playlists a video belongs to. This ensures consistent, predictable behavior:
- Viewer plays from Playlist A → Playlist A’s profile applies
- Viewer plays from Playlist B → Playlist B’s profile applies
- Viewer plays the video directly → only the video’s own profile applies (or the site default, if no video profile is set)
How do DMA restrictions work?
DMA (Designated Market Area) restrictions are US-only and allow you to restrict or allow content by US broadcast market area, as defined by Nielsen. Enter the numeric DMA code for the market you want to target (e.g., 532 for Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY; 501 for New York City).
Zype resolves a viewer’s DMA using a ZIP-to-DMA mapping as the primary method (fast and cacheable). On mobile Apps Creator apps, device GPS is used as a fallback to derive DMA via polygon matching when ZIP data is unavailable.
| ℹ️ Note: DMA restrictions on mobile Apps Creator apps require location permission from the viewer. If permission is denied, playback is blocked with a “Location Required” message. See Mobile Location Enforcement for Apps Creator. |
What does the Default Profile toggle do?
When the Default Profile toggle is enabled on a profile, that profile is automatically assigned to every new video added to your library going forward. It does not retroactively apply to existing videos.
Use this for sites where all new content should have the same access policy by default (e.g., US-only). You can always override the default on individual videos by assigning a different profile on that video’s Content Rules tab.
| ✅ Tip: Only one profile can be the default at a time. Enabling the Default Profile toggle on a new profile will disable it on the previously designated default. |
How do I use the Test Content Rules tool?
The Test Content Rules tool is located on the Content Rules tab of any video. Enter the geographic context you want to simulate (Country, State, City, ZIP, DMA code, IP address) and click TEST. The tool returns whether the simulated viewer would be Allowed or Denied, and which rule in which profile produced that result.
See How to Use the Test Content Rules Tool for full instructions and common test scenarios.
Do Super Watchers bypass content rule profiles?
Yes. Super Watchers bypass all content rules, including Content Rule Profiles, exactly as they did with the previous rules system. No changes to Super Watcher behavior were introduced in this release. Super Watcher bypass applies regardless of geographic location or device type.
Is there an additional cost for Content Rule Profiles?
No. Content Rule Profiles are available to all eligible Zype customers at no additional charge as part of their existing plan.
How long does it take for profile changes to take effect?
Profile changes typically propagate within a few minutes. If you update a profile and results appear stale in the Test Content Rules tool or in live playback, wait 2–5 minutes and try again.
