How to Create and Manage Content Rule Profiles

This article explains how to create Content Rule Profiles, configure rules, and assign profiles to your videos and playlists in Zype CMS.

Before You Begin

  • You must have admin or editor access to your Zype CMS account.
  • Content Rule Profiles are managed under Settings → Site Settings → Content Rules Settings.
  • Profiles can be assigned to individual videos and playlists, or applied in bulk across large libraries.

Step 1: Create a New Profile

  1. In the Zype CMS Dashboard, navigate to Settings → Site Settings → Content Rules Settings.
  2. Click Create Profile.
  3. Enter a Profile Name. Use a descriptive name that reflects the restriction (e.g., “Albany NY Local - DMA 532” or “US Only”).
  4. Optionally add a Description to note the business purpose of this profile.
  5. Default Profile toggle: if enabled, this profile will be automatically applied to every new video added to your library going forward. It does not retroactively apply to existing videos. Leave off unless you want this to be your site-wide default for new content.
  6. Proceed to Step 2 to configure rules.
Profile Details section of the Edit Content Rule Profile screen, showing the Profile Name, Description, and Default Profile toggle.

Step 2: Add and Configure Rules

Rules are configured in the Rules Configuration section of the profile editor. Rules are evaluated in list order, top to bottom. The first rule that matches the viewer’s location is applied.

  1. Click + ADD RULE to add a new rule.
  2. Set the Enabled toggle to ON to activate the rule (rules set to OFF are skipped during evaluation).
  3. Set the Policy: Allow Access (viewer can watch) or Deny Access (viewer is blocked).
  4. Set the Match Type (see Geographic Targeting Reference for full descriptions): Global, Country, State, City, Zip Code, DMA Code, IP Address, or Region.
  5. Enter the corresponding values for the match type (e.g., enter 532 for DMA 532 Albany NY, or US for country code United States).
  6. To add multiple values for the same rule, press Enter after each value.
  7. Repeat to add additional rules as needed.
  8. Drag the handle on the left side of each rule to reorder. Rule order matters — the first match wins.
  9. Click Save Changes.
The Match Type dropdown, showing all supported geographic targeting options.

✅  Tip: Common pattern — DMA-exclusive allow: Rule 1: Allow Access / DMA Code / 532. Rule 2: Deny Access / Global. Any viewer in Albany, NY (DMA 532) is allowed; all others are denied. The Global deny rule acts as a catch-all.
A two-rule profile. Rule 1 applies a Deny for a specific DMA code; Rule 2 applies a Deny globally as a catch-all. Drag the handles to reorder rules.

Step 3: Assign a Profile to a Video

  1. Navigate to the video in your CMS Library.
  2. Click the Content Rules tab.
  3. In the Content Rule Profile section, use the dropdown to select the profile you want to assign.
  4. Click Save (or the equivalent save action for the video).
  5. To verify the rules are working as expected, use the Test Content Rules tool directly below the profile assignment. See How to Use the Test Content Rules Tool.
The Content Rules tab on a video. Assign a profile using the dropdown at the top, then use the Test Content Rules panel below to simulate viewer access.

Step 4: Assign a Profile to a Playlist

  1. Navigate to the playlist in your CMS.
  2. Click the Content Rules tab.
  3. Select the profile from the Content Rule Profile dropdown and save.

ℹ️  Note: Playlist rules apply only when a viewer plays content from that specific playlist. If a viewer accesses the video directly (search, deep link, continue watching), only the video’s own profile applies. See Content Rule Profiles — FAQ for more details.

Step 5: Bulk Apply or Remove Profiles

For large libraries, you can apply or remove a profile across many videos or playlists at once using bulk operations from the CMS Library views.

  1. In the Video Library or Playlists list view, select the checkboxes next to the items you want to update.
  2. Choose Apply Profile or Remove Profile from the bulk actions menu.
  3. Select the profile to apply (or confirm removal) and submit.
  4. Large operations run as background jobs.

ℹ️  Note: Bulk operations are asynchronous for large sets. For very large libraries (1,000+ items), allow a few minutes for the job to complete.

Managing Existing Profiles

  • Edit: Click the profile name in Content Rules Settings to open the editor.
  • Duplicate: Use the duplicate action to create a copy of an existing profile. Useful for creating regional variations.
  • Delete: Profiles can only be deleted when they are not assigned to any video or playlist. Remove all assignments first.
