How to Use the Test Content Rules Tool

The Test Content Rules tool lets you simulate viewer access to a specific video by entering location details. Use it to verify that your Content Rule Profiles are configured correctly before they affect live viewers.

Where to Find the Test Tool

The Test Content Rules tool is located on the Content Rules tab of any video in your Zype CMS Library.

  1. In the CMS Dashboard, navigate to Library and open a video.
  2. Click the Content Rules tab.
  3. The Test Content Rules panel appears below the profile assignment section.

How to Run a Test

  1. (Optional) Consumer field: search for a specific Consumer (viewer account) to test as that user. This is useful for testing Super Watcher bypass behavior or consumer-specific entitlements.
  2. Enter geo context fields. You do not need to fill in all fields — enter only the values relevant to the location you want to simulate:
    • Country: select from the dropdown (defaults to Global if left blank)
    • State: enter state or province name/abbreviation
    • City: enter city name
    • ZIP code: enter a 5-digit US ZIP code
    • DMA code: enter the numeric DMA code (e.g., 532)
    • IP address: enter a specific IP address
  3. Click TEST.
  4. Review the result: the tool returns whether the viewer would be Allowed or Denied, and which rule in which profile produced that outcome.

Understanding the Result

The test evaluates rules in the following resolution order:

  • 1. Video — the profile assigned directly on this video
  • 2. Playlist — the profile on a playlist that includes this video (if applicable)
  • 3. Site default — the site’s default content rule profile, if one is configured

🚨  Important: If a profile is in effect and no rule matches your test, the outcome is Denied. If no profile applies at all, the default outcome is Allowed.

ℹ️  Note: If you recently changed a content rule profile or its rules, it can take a few minutes for updates to propagate. Wait a few minutes and retest if results appear stale.
