Storage management policies for uploads introduces flexible storage retention policies for pre-processed, uploaded video, giving users the ability to manage how long assets are stored in Zype.. Once videos are uploaded to Zype, and transcoded into the requested processed outputs, Account Owners can now choose how long Zype should store the pre-processed uploaded video files.

What storage policy would be best for my workflow on Zype?

To avoid incurring additional storage charges, customers should evaluate their current storage usage and select a retention policy that aligns with their needs. Below are customer usage cohort examples with recommendations on storage policy assignments.

Current storage usage can also be viewed within the platform in the Storage Management section:  https://admin.zype.com/site/storage_management

Platform Usage Cohort Examples:

  • VOD Streaming: Customers in this group typically use Zype to host encoded videos for web and OTT streaming.  Customers in this cohort typically do not wish to store their original uploaded assets on Zype for longer than it is required to generate the transcoded outputs. Customers in this cohort also have storage of the original assets outside of Zype.

Recommendation:  To avoid charges, Zype recommends that your uploads are configured to be automatically deleted after 72 hours unless long-term storage is of the video uploads are required.

  • VOD Streaming + Archive:  Customers in this cohort typically use Zype to host encoded videos for web and OTT streaming, as well as long-term archival storage.  However, if content no longer needs to be archived, consider adjusting the retention policy to a shorter duration to reduce storage costs.

Recommendation:  By default, all customers have the "Forever" retention storage policy applied, thus no action is needed

  • VOD Streaming + Syndication Customers: Customers in this cohort typically use Zype to host encoded videos for web and OTT, as well as syndicate content to third-parties.  Third-party syndicators typically require the original customer assets, or high-fidelity equivalents.  These customers syndicate content via API or more commonly, via MRSS feeds from the Zype platform Feed Marketplace.

Recommendation:   Zype recommends that customers who frequently syndicate original video upload content to third-parties utilize the 90-day or Forever storage policy .   Review your syndication workflows and adjust your storage policy to ensure that only the necessary content is retained for the required duration.  Please consult your account manager if you have questions.

  • Playout-Only Customers: Customers in this cohort leverage Zype's Playout product exclusively. Customers in this cohort fall into two usage categories, customers who have storage of the original assets outside of Zype and customers who leverage Zype Playout for reBroadcasting of live content created by live clipping, and thus typically require long term storage options on Zype.

Recommendation:  If your playout configuration does not require long-term storage, Zype recommends first enabling "Always Transcode for Playout" on your site settings here [add link to support article].  Secondly, update your upload storage policy to 72-hours .  However, if your configuration requires longer term storage, Zype recommends retaining the default policy of "Forever".

Each customer should carefully consider their use case and set their policy accordingly in the Zype Admin.  Please consult your account manager of Zype support if you have questions or required additional guidance.
