Creating a Live Encoder (Self-Service Provisioning)

Live 3 enables customers to provision live encoders directly within Zype Admin.

High-Level Workflow

  1. Navigate to Live > Manage Encoders 3

  2. Select Add Encoder

  3. Configure encoder settings (region, DVR Duration, options)

  4. Save and provision the encoder

Once provisioned, the encoder becomes available for use with live channels and events.

Configuring the Live DVR Window

Live 3 allows you to configure rolling DVR windows for live channels.

What the DVR Window Controls

  • How far back viewers can rewind during a live stream

  • The duration of retained live playback

Basic DVR Configuration

  1. Open the live channel or encoder configuration

  2. Enable DVR

  3. Specify the DVR window length

  4. Save changes

DVR settings apply automatically to supported live playback experiences.

Starting a Live Encoder

Once provisioned, a live encoder can be started at any time.

Basic Steps

  1. Select the encoder under Live > Encoders

  2. Retrieve ingest details (RTMP URL and credentials)

  3. Configure your external encoder or source

  4. Start the encoder

  5. Monitor stream health and status

Live 3 provides real-time status indicators to confirm active streaming.

Creating a Live Event

Live events define discrete live broadcasts and enable post-event workflows such as trimming and archiving.

Creating a Live Event

  1. Navigate to Live > Live Events

  2. Select Create Live Event

  3. Assign an encoder and select your Event Type

  4. Configure event metadata

  5. Schedule the event or start broadcasting immediately

Events can be started immediately or scheduled for a future time.

Trimming a Live Event

After a live event has completed, you can manually trim the recorded content.

Common Use Cases

  • Remove pre-roll or post-roll content

  • Exclude technical issues at the beginning or end

  • Produce a clean on-demand VOD recording for Archive

Basic Trimming Workflow

  1. Open the completed live event

  2. Select Trim Event

  3. Adjust start and end points

  4. Save changes

Trimming updates the archived output without affecting the original live broadcast.

Archiving a Live Event (Live-to-VOD)

Live 3 supports converting completed live events into VOD assets.

How Archiving Works

  • Live events can be archived as on-demand video

  • Archived assets behave like standard VOD content

  • Metadata, thumbnails, and monetization can be managed post-archive

Archiving Workflow

  1. Open the completed live event

  2. Select Archive Event

  3. Confirm archive options

  4. Publish or manage the resulting VOD asset

Using the Live 3 API

Live 3 includes an enhanced API for automation and integrations.

Common API Use Cases

  • Encoder provisioning and management

  • Event creation and scheduling

  • Starting and stopping encoders

  • Retrieving usage and status data

The existing Live API remains backwards compatible, while new endpoints enable access to Live 3–specific capabilities.

See Live 3 API Documentation for full details.
