What is GDPR?
GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) is new legislation in the European Union (EU) focused on data protection and privacy for individuals within the EU. GDPR is intended to provide more control to EU citizens over their personal data. GDPR legislation goes into effect as of May 25, 2018. You can read more about GDPR on Wikipedia if you would like to learn more.
How does GDPR affect Zype customers?
While we can’t make any official legal recommendations, we suggest reading up about GDPR and consulting with your own legal team to determine whether you are impacted by GDPR. That said, if you are based in the EU, conduct business in the EU, or have viewers based in the EU, there is a chance you may be affected by GDPR acting as a controller.
GDPR defines a controller as “the natural or legal person, public authority, agency or another body which, alone or jointly with others, determines the purposes and means of the processing of personal data.” This means if your business is using personal data of your viewers in any way to inform business decisions (even if you’re not directly processing that data), you are likely a controller in the perspective of GDPR.
How is Zype affected by GDPR?
Under GDPR, Zype is considered a processor, meaning we process data on behalf of Zype’s customers, classified as controllers. This means that during the time you use Zype’s services, you retain ownership and control over data in your account. That said, Zype is working to ensure that as a processor, our data processing approach is in compliance with GDPR.
What is Zype doing to comply with GDPR regulations?
As a processor, we provide compliance with high security standards, such as encryption of data in motion, mitigating risk from DDOS and other types of attacks, and by providing a team that’s available to our customers for support related issues.
We know GDPR preparedness is important for our customers (controllers), so we are taking strides to make it easier to partner with Zype as a processor. For customers impacted by GDPR, we can work with you to set up a Data Processing Agreement (DPA). Please submit a support ticket if you'd like to learn more.
