Preview your Amazon Fire TV beta app within Amazon's "Web App Tester" (to publish yourself) Follow

 

Once you've acquired your Amazon Fire TV device and downloaded Amazon's Web App Tester, you're ready to add and preview your app on the device. First, follow the steps to download Amazon's Web App Tester:

  1. Acquire an Amazon Fire TV or Fire TV Stick (if you already have one, please skip to step 4)
  2. If you do not have an existing Amazon account, create one at Amazon.com
  3. Set up your Fire TV using your Amazon.com account credentials created in Step 2
  4. Search for "Web App Tester" within your Amazon Fire TV device. You will have to fully type out "Web App Test", scroll down once to the words "Web App Tester" and click enter on the remote. From there, scroll to "App & Games" and open the Web App Tester app shown below.

After you've downloaded the tester, Amazon allows for a few options in order to test within the app: 

Option 1 - Upload the beta app to your own web host

Note: This option requires third-party SSL web hosting and, in some cases, a domain name. A developer's assistance is recommended for this option.

  1. Unzip the beta app package archive downloaded from Zype
  2. Upload the files to a web host of your choice (examples of common web hosts include Amazon S3, MediaTemple, GoDaddy, Network Solutions, etc.)
  3. Copy the HTTP link to the app's index.html file
  4. Open the "Web App Tester" app on your Fire TV
  5. In the top right corner, make sure it's set to "TEST HOSTED APP" (Note: it should default this way) (Fig. 1)
  6. Click "Name Your App" (Fig. 2)
  7. Enter the app name you want and click "Submit" (Note: this is for internal use only and won't be seen anywhere else)
  8. Enter the URL copied in Step 3 (Fig. 3)
  9. Click "Submit"
  10. Click "Add to Device"
  11. Your app will appear in the list below (Fig. 4)
  12. Scroll down and click "Test" to the left of your app (Fig. 4)
  13. Your app will open

Option 2 - Create a Local Web Server on your computer

Note: These instructions apply to specifically to macOS, however, the principles are applicable to any operating system (Windows, Linux, etc). A developer's assistance is recommended for this option.

  1. Unzip the beta app package archive downloaded from Zype
  2. In Finder, navigate to the folder containing the app and copy it (Command + C)
  3. Open the Terminal app.
  4. At the prompt, type cd, space, then paste the folder copied in Step 2 (Command + V): Example: cd /Users/user1/Desktop/zype-aftv
  5. In Terminal, start a HTTP server using the following command: python -m SimpleHTTPServer
  6. Open System Preferences > Network > Status to find your IP Address
  7. Note the IP Address
  8. Make sure both your computer and Fire TV are connected to the same network
  9. Open the "Web App Tester" app on your Fire TV
  10. In the top right corner, make sure it's set to "TEST HOSTED APP" (Note: it should default this way) (Fig. 1)
  11. Click "Name Your App" (Fig. 2)
  12. Enter the app name you want and click "Submit" (Note: this is for internal use only and won't be seen anywhere else)
  13. Enter the IP Address from Step 6, prepending http:// and appending :8000/index.html (example: http://192.168.1.1:8000/index.html) (Fig. 3)
  14. Click "Submit"
  15. Click "Add to Device"
  16. Your app will appear in the list below (Fig. 4)
  17. Scroll down and click "Test" to the left of your app (Fig. 4)
  18. Your app will open
  19. Press (Control + C) to stop the HTTP server when you have completed testing
